Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of outage characteristics and efficiency improvement measures for the 110 kV Dalanzadgad overhead transmission line in Mongolia using operational data from 2016 to 2024. The study examines the influence of key environmental and technical factors such as insulator contamination, weather conditions, conductor defects, and bird-related incidents. During the study period, 46 outage events were recorded, of which 45.6% were associated with bird activity, 36.9% with insulator contamination, and 17.5% with weather conditions. These results show that environmental factors play a dominant role in the occurrence of outages. The effectiveness of maintenance measures was also evaluated. The number of locations affected by compression splice sleeves and protective coatings was reduced, which improved conductor surface conditions and resulted in an estimated reduction in line losses of approximately 11%. In addition, the replacement of conventional insulators with aerodynamic-type insulators significantly reduced contamination-related outages by 88%. The results suggest that appropriate maintenance strategies and targeted mitigation measures can improve the operational reliability and efficiency of overhead transmission lines, particularly under harsh environmental conditions.
